UMM.. OOPS? August Book Haul

So I really should have my debit card taken away, and should never be allowed into a bookstore without a gift card. So originally I had it all planned out. I had my cart on Barnes & Noble ready as well as some in my cart on Amazon (got to get the best deals, am I right?). But I decided to go to Barnes & Noble with my mom because she was looking for something else to read. This is where I went terribly wrong. Not only did I buy 5 (yes, 5) books at the store that day, I also went home and semi-modified my orders and placed 2 book orders. This is what has come out of this horrible decision.

The Lightning Theif by Rick Riordan - I've never read it and because of all the hype that I've seen online about the series, I feel the need to. Honestly I didn't really have any clue as to what it was about. I just know that it's super popular. Now that I've read the back (and I literally just read it as I'm writing this), it sounds like an amazing book. The cover definitely looks pretty epic. According to the blurb, Percy Jackson's life has been invaded by the Greek gods and he is a suspect in the theft of Zeus' lightning bolt. He then must go on a 10-day quest to find the lightning bolt and the thief, all while confronting other obstacles on the way. I'm really looking forward to getting into this series.

Cinderella's Dress by Shonna Slayton - I had been looking at this book the past couple times I went to Barnes & Noble. I haven't really heard much about it at all, but it sounds really interesting from the blurb on the back. It's about a girl, Kate, during World War II, who is trying to focus on her life and helping the war effort. Some relatives from Poland arrive, along with a trunk that supposedly contains Cinderella's dresses. Kate has to deal with the mystery of the dresses before it's too late. From the first time I picked it up, it really intrigued me and I just couldn't walk away from it this time.

The Lucy Variations by Sara Zarr - Another book that I haven't heard much about, but one that I've picked up and pondered my last couple trips to the bookstore. Lucy is going to be an amazing concert pianist, but a death, and a betrayal, made her walk away. She meets Will, her brother's piano teacher, who helps her find her way back to her passion. It seems like a good contemporary read. I'm really excited to pick this one up.

The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes - I heard Lainey, from gingerreadslainey, talking about this in a haul video. I don't really remember what she said about it other than that she had bought it. I saw it at the bookstore and had to pick it up on impulse. Lainey's boyfriend has just broken up with her and she is devastated. She wants to do whatever it takes to get him back. She picks up The Art of War and decides to use it to get her boyfriend back.

The Art of Wishing by Lindsay Ribar - I saw this and saw that it was about genies and I had to get it. It was that simple. And it also has a sequel so that's exciting! "Oliver's magic binds him to Margo until she makes three wishes. And while she tries to figure out what to wish for she begins to realize he might be what she wants most." There's more to the back blurb but not much that tells about the story. It seems like it's got that magical element to it but it isn't an epic story or something too heavy or deep. I think it might be something that might read like a contemporary with a fantastical element and I'm really interested in that.

If I stay by Gayle Forman - I've been seeing this a lot on BookTube recently, and I've also been completely hooked by the movie trailer. So if course I had to buy the book before I watch the movie, right? Mia had everything, and then, in an instant, most of that is taken from her. She has to decide what she wants to do, whether she wants to stay living and be with what remains of her life, or does she want to die and be with her family? I am already sucked in to this story just by reading the back blurb and by hearing the summaries of various people on BookTube. The only thing that's bothering me about this book is the stupid "soon to be a major motion picture" sticker on the front.

The Elite and The One by Kiera Cass - I'm super excited to read the rest of this series. (of course I still need to get the novellas that go with it). I wanted to go out and buy these almost immediately after I finished the first one, but I had to wait to get paid. I won't summarize these because of spoilers; I'm not even reading the blurbs on these.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater - Another one that I've been hearing about on BookTube, but mostly I wanted to read something by her before I potentially get the chance to meet her at the Decatur Book Festival. I don't really know what made me pick this series up before the Shiver trilogy (especially since she is going to be promoting her new companion novel to the series at the book festival), but this is the one I went with. I can't really tell what the story is about from the back of the book, though. "There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve. Either you're his true love... or you killed him." Blue is with her mother watching the soon-to-be dead walk past, but she never sees them. This year, though, a boy named Gansey comes from the dark and speaks to her. Gansey is from the local private school and can only mean trouble. She is drawn to him. This seems to be a very interesting story and I'm really looking forward to diving in.

Icons by Margaret Stohl - This is another book that I bought because the author will be at the Decatur Book Festival. Everything changed the day the Icon appeared in Los Angeles. The day that everyone dropped dead. Everyone except for the Icon Children, the only four humans on Earth immune to the power of the Icons. The Icon Children discover that something that they had always thought was their greatest weakness, might actually be their greatest strength, their emotions. I am incredibly intrigued by this book, especially since I had absolutely no idea what it was about when I bought it (I really seem to like doing that don't I?)

Lux Beginnings: Obsidian and Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout - I've heard some great things about this series. I'm really excited to start reading it. "There's an alien next door. And with his looming height and eerie green eyes, he's hot... until he opens his mouth. He's infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, he marks me. Turns out he has a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal his abilities and the only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first." I mean, obviously this is going to be some sort of love story attached to this. But I'm really excited because I haven't read anything about aliens and I've heard some really great things about this series.

The Assassins Curse and The Pirate's Wish by Cassandra Rose Clarke - When I heard pirates, I was like "heck yes!" When I heard that the publisher was going out of business, I was like "NEED NOW!" Ananna runs away when her parents try to marry her off to another pirate clan, only causing the scorned clan to send an assassin after her. Using magic she isn't really sure how to use, she tries to fend him off. Instead, she binds them together and they have to complete three tasks in order to break the spell, all while dealing with a host of problems they encounter. Yay, pirates! :))

So then, I got paid again... and I figure, I haven't bought a decent amount of books in months (until recently). It's seriously probably been over a year since I bought a decent amount of books, so I feel pretty justified. And I went to B&N again, just looking for Isla and the Happily Ever After but of course they didn't have it so I had to buy different books, right? Never mind that I had just placed two other book orders as well...

The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han - I've heard so many great things about this series. I've been looking to pick this up for a while, and when I saw that part of it was in the buy 2 get 1 free section, I decided to go ahead and pick it up now. It's summer. And to Belly, that means a trip to Cousins Beach with her family and her mother's best friend's family, including her sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. Conrad has been on Belly's mind forever, and she hopes that maybe he might start to feel the same way.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - I've heard a lot of talk about this book. I have been very intrigued by it. I also think that it would be a great addition to my October TBR where I plan to read mostly creepy, Halloween-like books. The blurb on the back cover is very vague though.

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover - This is the first book in the series that I read the novella from in August. I wanted to read the series that it came from. Sky meets Dean Holder, both seniors in high school, both with not so great reputations. She is captivated but tries to stay away from him. He breaks down her defenses and their bond grows, but will his secrets be to much?

Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer by Katie Alender - I loved the first book in the Bad Girls Don't Die series, so I had to pick up another of Katie Alender's books. Colette Iselin is excited to be in Paris on a class trip. But the murders taking place across the city are putting everyone on edge. Colette keeps seeing a pale woman in a ball gown and powdered wig, who looks just like Marie Antoinette. Colette, with the help of a charming French boy, tries to solve the mystery.

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins - I mean obviously. My dad ended up ordering this for me actually because he has a B&N membership and I wanted to be sure that it would get here before Saturday when I will (hopefully) be meeting Stephanie Perkins. I'm not going to give a description because I'm not going to read the inside flap. I want to go into it knowing nothing (other than the descriptions that I've heard other people give).

Where She Went by Gayle Forman - Okay when I opened the package that this came in, the front cover was completely folded in half. Can anything be more annoying? But I'm really excited to see how this story ends.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld - Another book that I've heard so much about. I'm really excited to finally have it and get to read it. This seems like a really interesting story and I can't wait to dive into the world.

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout - I'm really interested by this book. I think that it's going to be a part of my October spooky reads. Sam had it all until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie. Sam comes back but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened that night. As Sam is trying to piece her life back together, she is realizing that she doesn't like the person she was before. She's viewing this as a second chance. Cassie is still missing and the only other person who knows what happened wants to make sure that Sam doesn't tell.

Sailor Moon Volume 1 by Naoko Takeuchi - I used to love the anime when I was younger (and let's be real, I still love it). I've always wanted to read the original manga, so when I saw these reprints on B&N they all went into my wish list and I'm hoping to eventually get the whole series.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi - This one seems really interesting. I have heard some great things about it. Juliette's touch is fatal and The Reestablishment had plans to use her as a weapon. But Juliette has plans for herself. She's finding the strength to fight back.

From Bad to Cursed and As Dead as it Gets by Katie Alender - I really loved the first book in this series so I had to buy the rest of the series.

Well that was it (other than the books that I bought at the Decatur Book Festival but they will get their own post). Was anyone counting? Because I don't know if I want to know... 27. I bought 27 books this month. I promise my hauls won't be this big every month.
